10 Downing Street

Brief information

An address that appears to be a single house grew out of three different buildings. Robert Walpole received them for his work, but did not accept them as a personal gift: the house was attached to the office of Lord Treasurer, and later to that of Prime Minister. That is why 10 Downing Street reads not as an ordinary residence, but as an official mechanism of power assembled from an old mansion, a townhouse, and a cottage.

This assembly explains the building’s main contradiction. For almost three hundred years it has had about a hundred rooms, yet for a long time it was considered inconvenient because of its confusing layout and expensive upkeep. The address became a permanent residence only in 1902. Behind the black door stands not a palace conceived as a single whole, but a house adapted to the office, ceremonies, security, and the work of government.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to start with the facade and the door: much of the exterior appearance goes back to William Kent’s reconstruction, when several buildings were combined into one complex. The small black door in a cream-colored frame functions as the recognizable sign of the address, but its details remain almost domestic: a lion knocker with the inscription “Lord Treasurer,” a brass letterbox, and the number 10, whose zero is set at an angle in memory of the poorly fixed original.

Behind this ceremonial appearance, the logic of a closed official house is visible. The door opens only from the inside, and after the 1991 attack the original oak leaf was replaced with a heavier and safer one. Inside, the same mixture of symbol and work continues in the black-and-white marble tiles, the guard’s chair with a protective hood and boxes for hot coals, and Kent’s spiral staircase with portraits of prime ministers. The details show how a private house became at once a residence, an office, and a carefully guarded stage of state power.
