Arsenal San Francisco

Brief Information

The San Francisco Armory looks like a castle, but it appeared as a replacement for the lost National Guard armory: the old building was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake, and the new one was built in 1912-1914. The castle-like stylization with Neo-Moorish elements was not a ruin from the past, but a deliberately chosen image for a service building.

Inside, the armory was not limited to a military function. An arena for boxing matches was set up there, becoming one of the well-known boxing venues on the U.S. West Coast. After the National Guard moved out, the building stood empty and deteriorated for decades, and later proved convenient for Kink.com film sets precisely because its gloomy castle-like appearance did not require serious remodeling.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to read the building through the clash between its external form and its changing functions. The castle-like silhouette and Neo-Moorish details show that from the start the armory was built as an expressive image of strength, not as a neutral warehouse. The interior boxing arena adds a second meaning: the large service building was also designed for mass events, so its scale served more than military needs alone.

It is also worth comparing the arena with the building's later use. When the National Guard left, protected status made radical structural changes difficult, and the building remained without a new purpose for a long time. Later, film sets occupied it because the existing gloomy, castle-like environment already suited the new function. This detail changes how one sees the facade: the decorative “fortress” turned out to be not just a style, but a resource that allowed the building to survive several incompatible roles.
