Athenian Tower 1
Brief information
Athens Tower 1 stands out not for its age or decoration, but for a type rare in Greece: it is a 103-meter office tower regarded as the country’s only true skyscraper. In Athens, it marked a sharp leap upward: built in 1971, it surpassed the 14-story Hilton Athens, 65 meters tall, which had previously been a prominent high-rise landmark in the city.
At the time of its completion, the tower was the tallest structure in the entire Balkan region. Today, this fact helps one see it not simply as a tall office building, but as an attempt to introduce into Athens’ urban fabric a format that remained an exception for the city. Its current use also continues this logic: the premises are leased by Greek and foreign companies.
What to notice right away
It makes sense to compare three confirmed details: a height of 103 meters, 28 floors, and the former reference point represented by the 14-story Hilton Athens. The difference shows that the tower did not merely raise the city’s bar a little, but almost changed the very scale of high-rise construction in Athens. This is the main way to read the building: through the verticality that sharply set it apart from more familiar large buildings.
The second detail is its office purpose. Athens Tower 1 is not described as an observation deck, a monument, or a public space; in the source text it functions as a business building occupied by companies. Therefore, its expressiveness is tied above all to the form and function of a skyscraper: a multi-story vertical shell for offices proved so unusual in Greece that the tower is still singled out as the only “true” example of this type.
