Brief information

The stone arch bridge Baliqiao was not merely a crossing over the Tonghui River: in imperial China, it marked the boundary between Beijing and Zhili Province. Therefore, its form and position matter together. The arch speaks of a sturdy stone crossing, while the place itself explains why an ordinary bridge became a point of transition from one space to another.

The name is also tied to distance, not to legend: “Ba li qiao” means “bridge at eight li,” because it stood exactly eight li from Tongzhou. At the bridge, the imperial mode of travel changed: before reaching it, the emperor rode in a palanquin; here, he transferred to horses or to a boat. In this way, a single crossing shows where the urban order ended and the road began.

What to notice first

It makes sense to look at Baliqiao as a boundary mechanism. The stone arch over the Tonghui River explains its first function: the bridge connected the banks and made it possible to cross the water line. Its location at the junction of Chaoyang and Tongzhou adds a second layer: the place was connected not only with the river, but also with the transition between administrative spaces.

The name “bridge at eight li” should be compared with this role. It records the distance from Tongzhou and turns the bridge into a reference point on the road. The strongest detail is the emperor’s transfer at Baliqiao. The palanquin, horses, and boat show that what changed here was not ceremony for ceremony’s sake, but the very mode of movement. Because of this, the arch bridge reads not as a neutral crossing, but as a place where road, river, and power converged at one point.
