Bridge of Sighs

Brief information

The name of the Bridge of Sighs is easy to take as romantic, but its original meaning is darker: convicts were led across it from the judicial section of the Doge's Palace to the prisons. That is why the bridge is important not only as a crossing over the canal, but as part of Venice's judicial machinery: the courtroom, the old prison, and the New Prison were linked into a single chain.

The structure itself explains the legend better than any caption. It is a covered passage at about the height of the third floor, not an open pedestrian bridge. A view outside was possible through a barred little window; it is precisely this that is connected with the image of the last look at Venice before imprisonment.

What to notice first

It makes sense to read the bridge as a closed corridor between buildings, not as an ordinary crossing. Its position above the Rio di Palazzo shows that it connects not banks for strolling, but rooms on an upper level. The covered form emphasizes the service character of the passage: movement along it was hidden from the street and the canal.

You can compare three physical details. Istrian stone gives the bridge a light-colored, unified mass; the Baroque style turns even a prison passage into an ornate architectural object; the barred little window sharply changes the meaning of the decoration. This grille reminds us that the famous view of Venice here was not a reward, but the last brief opening before the New Prison.
