Confectionery "Colombo"

Brief Information

Confeitaria Colombo looks like a European café transplanted into the center of Rio de Janeiro, and that is exactly what made it a notable symbol of the city’s Belle Époque. The place opened in 1894 as a business founded by Portuguese immigrants, and in 1912–1918 its interior halls were decorated in the Art Nouveau style. What matters here is not the date in itself, but the fact that the present appearance is tied to this remodeling: the interior should be read as a carefully assembled stage, not simply as an old café.

The social history is also visible through the function of the space. A few years after opening, Colombo became a meeting place for Brazilian writers, artists, and intellectuals, which earned it the nickname “branch of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.” This changes how one looks at the hall: the tables and decorative splendor were not only a backdrop for sweets, but also an urban setting for conversation.

What to Notice First

It is worth comparing three levels of finish: the large crystal mirrors from Antwerp, the rosewood friezes, and the wooden furniture by Antonio Borsoi. These details show how the café created its impression not through size, but through materials and craftsmanship: reflective surfaces expand the hall, warm wood emphasizes frames and lines, and the furniture connects the decorative interior with the everyday act of sitting at a table.

A separate focus is the vertical organization of the space. In 1922, the confectionery was expanded with a second floor containing a tea room; an opening in the first-floor ceiling allows one to see the roof window decorated with stained glass. In this way, the former café became a more complex interior: the eye moves upward from the hall toward the overhead light. Today the Cristóvão restaurant operates on the second floor, so this added section remains not a detached historical note, but a visible shift in scale and function within the building.
