Gold Museum in Lima

CategoryMuseumAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief Information

The name promises gold, but the main twist here is not about glitter, but about trust in it. The Gold Museum of Peru in Lima displays objects from pre-Inca and Inca civilizations: jewelry, ritual items, textiles, ceramics, mummies, and works in gold and silver. In the original description, these metals are linked with paired meanings: sun and moon, day and night, male and female. So the exhibits are worth seeing not only as treasures, but as objects through which beliefs and the structure of the world were read.

In 2002, inspections showed that most of the metal items in the collection were fake; after the scandal, the museum removed the gold forgeries from the exhibition. This fact changes how one looks at the display cases: what matters here is not the simple formula of “ancient gold,” but the question of how a museum distinguishes an authentic relic from a later imitation.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare several types of objects, because they show different roles of metal. Funerary masks, diadems, ear ornaments, and pectorals are connected with the body and status; ritual tumi knives move metal into the sphere of ceremony. A tunic covered with a thousand gold plates and the palanquin of the rulers of Chan Chan, decorated with gold and silver, show not just a single ornament, but an entire surface of power.

One detail stands apart from the rest: a human skull with teeth inserted made of purple rock crystal. It helps show that value here was not reduced to gold. It is also worth noticing traces of technique: hammering, lamination, filigree, polishing, and sometimes the mixing of gold with platinum. And the collection of weapons and armor on the first and second floors creates a sharp contrast: the museum combines archaeological objects from Peru with weapons gathered from around the world.
