Grande Île (Strasbourg)

Brief information

Grande Île is a historic center that can be read quite literally as an island: it is separated by the main channel of the River Ill and the Faux-Rempart canal. That is why what matters here is not only the individual buildings, but also the very frame of the place: a dense urban center was outlined by water and has been preserved as a unified old quarter.

Within this frame, different logics of the city are visible. Place Kléber occupies a central position, and to the south rises Strasbourg Cathedral, a richly decorated 15th-century Gothic church and one of the tallest in the world. To the west lies Petite France, a former district of tanners, millers, and fishermen. A fact that changes how one sees the island: Strasbourg became the first city whose entire center was inscribed on the World Heritage List.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to compare three types of urban traces. The first is the cathedral south of Place Kléber: its Gothic decoration and height show how church architecture set the scale for the center. The second is Petite France in the west of the island: the mention of tanners, millers, and fishermen helps one read the quarter not only as a picturesque part of the city, but as a former working space by the water. The third is the Ancienne Douane, the former river customs house: it recalls that the canals were not only the island’s boundary, but also part of its economic life.

Four old churches and 18th-century palaces, including the Rohan Palace and the present town hall in the Hôtel de Hanau, add to this pattern. Together they show how, on one island, a religious center, craft districts, river trade, and secular power coexist.
