Hanoi Citadel

Brief Information

The Hanoi Citadel reads not as a single fortress, but as a place where different eras quite literally lie one on top of another. The first royal compound of the Ly dynasty period stood here; later, the space was expanded under the Tran, Le, and Nguyen. Most of the palaces and structures of Thang Long had been destroyed by the end of the 19th century during the French conquest, and the wars of the 20th century continued this disintegration.

That is why not only the surviving architecture matters, but also the very ground of the citadel. Systematic excavations began only in the early 21st century. Archaeologists found layers from different periods, the foundations of columns and walls, drainage systems, wells, traces of ancient riverbeds and lakes. This fact changes how the place is seen: before you are not simply the remains of a palace center, but a cross-section of the city, where the layout, water, and foundations tell more than the vanished walls.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare four types of traces. The foundation of Kinh Thien Palace, the stone steps, and the railings with carved dragons show the ceremonial part of the old palace space: almost nothing remains of the building itself, but the direction of the ascent and the stone decoration still convey its status. The Doan Mon Gate is important as the preserved entrance to the Forbidden City of the citadel; it helps you imagine the boundary between ordinary territory and the closed center of power.

The Northern Gate and the Flag Tower already belong to the citadel of the Nguyen dynasty period. The tower is especially telling: built in 1812, it survived the destruction of many buildings in Hanoi, and under French rule it served as an observation post and communications hub. Alongside this military reading stands another detail: the French artillery headquarters on part of the Kinh Thien foundation. One and the same palace site was transformed from an imperial center into military infrastructure.
