Hong Kong Arts Centre

Brief information

In the late 1960s, contemporary art in Hong Kong was effectively tied to the City Hall building: the source text names no other shared venue for such works. The Hong Kong Arts Centre emerged as a response to this lack of space. Local art groups campaigned for a separate site, and after negotiations the centre received land near Gloucester Road in Wan Chai.

Opened in 1977, the centre is organized not as a single exhibition hall, but as a set of different venues under one roof. Galleries, theatres, a cinema, classrooms, studios, restaurants and offices coexist there. So the main point here is not a particular collection, but the model of the place itself: art is shown, discussed, studied and produced in one building.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare three venues of different scales. Louis Koo Cinema is designed for film screenings, seminars, concerts, ceremonies and press conferences; it is a hall where cinema is immediately connected with public conversation. McAulay Studio is smaller and more flexible: it is intended for small theatre productions and workshops. Shouson Theatre, by contrast, is designed for large theatre and dance performances, concerts, film screenings and seminars.

These halls are joined by the Pao Galleries, with exhibitions of decorative and applied arts, the Experimental Gallery, the Jockey Club Atrium and the Art Shop. This combination helps one read the centre as a working arrangement: stage, screen, gallery, teaching rooms and studios are located side by side. The permanent collection also supports this mixed logic: it includes sculpture, photography, ceramics, illustrations, and sound and visual installations.
