House under the Cross

Brief information

The House under the Cross got its name not from an owner or a function, but from the detail above the entrance: the cross, which immediately connects the building with its old urban biography. According to Jan Długosz, the house was built in 1474, but something else is more important when viewing it: this is not a frozen monument to a single era, but a building that has been rebuilt several times.

From the 18th century, the house served as a shelter for the needy; later there were plans to demolish it, but instead the space was used for shops and housing. Later it housed the office of the Association of Polish Artists, the Cricot Theatre, and now the Stanisław Wyspiański Theatre Museum operates here. The changing functions help one see the house as a shell that the city kept adapting anew.

What to notice first

It makes sense to start with the cross above the entrance: it is not just decoration, but the source of the building’s name. Such a detail sets the scale for reading the house: its history is hidden not only in dates, but also in small elements of the facade.

You can compare three confirmed lines of its structure and use. The first is the rebuilt volume itself: the text states directly that the building was altered several times. The second is the former practical purpose of its spaces: the shelter, then shops and living quarters, show that the house long served everyday needs, not only culture. The third is the theatrical trace: the Cricot Theatre and the present Theatre Museum turn the former urban building into a place of memory for the stage. Thus the cross, the rebuilding, and the change of functions are read together: outwardly it is one house, but its meaning shifted from aid and everyday life to theatre and museum preservation.
