Karolin Hospital

Brief information

Caroline Hospital was designed as a quarantine machine on an island: the sea provided isolation, a supply route, and water for cleaning, while the layout helped keep travelers suspected of having yellow fever separate from Marseille. Therefore, this place should be read not as an ordinary hospital, but as a set of architectural solutions against infection: ventilation, enclosure, separate wards, and control of the grounds were all part of a single design.

After its reconstruction in the mid-19th century, the hospital changed its role again: with the development of navigation and the advent of medicines, it began to receive mainly soldiers after service in Africa. In 1944, the complex was destroyed by bombing, after which it stood abandoned for a long time. The current restoration is important precisely because it makes visible again not the decorations, but the logic of the former quarantine hospital.

What to notice right away

It is worth comparing three elements of the layout. The separate wards show the complex’s main sanitary principle: the sick were separated not only from the outside world, but also from one another. The enclosure around the hospital continued the same idea at the scale of the entire site. The central structure resembling a captain’s bridge explains how surveillance was built into the architecture: from it, the hospital and the surrounding area could be observed.

The chapel between the wards for the sick and the convalescent adds an unexpected detail to the strict system of isolation. It was visible from everywhere and designed like a Greek temple, while the windows between the columns allowed bedridden patients to watch mass from the wards. Even the raised platform served a practical purpose: tools and medicines were stored there. The serial building materials continue the same idea: here, economy and sanitary calculation mattered more than ceremonial effect.
