La Grange (Geneva)

Brief Information

In La Grange Park, menhirs, the ruins of a Roman villa, and an 18th-century manor villa exist side by side. This is a rare case in which the history of a site can be read not only from dates, but from objects on the ground: the stones recall the Neolithic period, the ancient remains point to a Roman settlement, and the large house shows the transformation of an agricultural estate into an urban manor.

The name La Grange means “barn” or “threshing barn,” and it preserves the memory of the estate’s agricultural function. Later, the site became more representative in character: the villa’s facade was remodeled according to the tastes of a new era, gates with lions, an orangery, and new paths appeared. When William Favre bequeathed the estate to Geneva, private property became an urban space; therefore, the park is worth viewing as a place where the former manor did not disappear, but remained the framework of a public park.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare the oldest and the most “ceremonial” elements. The two menhirs and the ruins of the Roman villa are located in the same park, so the site is perceived not as decoration around a house, but as a place with a very long history of settlement. Next to this, Villa La Grange shows a different layer: an 18th-century country estate, later altered to suit new tastes.

The villa’s facade is important precisely as a trace of remodeling: the original Baroque appearance was changed after Favre purchased the estate. The gates with lions on the Quai Gustave-Ador side add a ceremonial entrance to the manor, while the orangery and the combination of winding and straight paths show that the park was designed as a carefully considered space, not simply as a green area. The rose garden, laid out in 1945–1946, marks a later stage: the former manor became a venue for public garden culture.
