Brief Information

Ljubljana Castle stands on a hill above the city, but its history can be read as more than just a history of defense. It is a medieval fortress from the 12th century, whose walls were almost completely rebuilt in the 15th century after destruction. Later, the castle ceased to be a military stronghold: in the 17th and 18th centuries it housed an arsenal and a hospital, and in the 19th and early 20th centuries it served as a prison.

Because of these changes, it is useful to view the castle as a structure that was constantly being given a new purpose. The Watchtower of 1848 was no longer built for a medieval siege, but for spotting fires in the city. In the 20th century, the building lost its former function, fell into disrepair, and then underwent a long reconstruction; today it houses a permanent exhibition on the history of Ljubljana.

What to Notice First

You can compare several details that show how the fortress changed its meaning. The walls belong to the 15th-century reconstruction: this is the main visible layer of the defensive castle after its almost complete destruction. The castle chapel is connected with the same period and reminds us that the fortified complex had more than just a military function. The Watchtower of 1848 is important as a later addition: it was needed for watching for fires in the city, not for enemies at the walls.

A separate focus is Šance on Castle Hill. These are the remains of fortifications on its highest natural part, which architect Jože Plečnik transformed into a promenade area in the late 1930s. The connection with the castle is emphasized by the chestnut avenue along the ridge. In this way, defensive traces, an urban walk, and a later telecommunications tower on the sandy plateau appear side by side.
