Macquarie Lighthouse

Brief Information

Macquarie Lighthouse is interesting not only because of its age: the present building repeats the appearance of the earlier lighthouse, which stood only a few meters away. So what we see is not simply a later replacement, but an attempt to preserve the recognizable form of Australia's first lighthouse site.

The first lighthouse appeared here in 1791 at the entrance to Sydney Harbour and was made of wood. In 1816, Governor Lachlan Macquarie laid the stone for a new building, but the modern lighthouse was built only in 1878-1880. The old building was demolished in 1883, so for several years almost twin structures existed side by side: the former lighthouse and its new version.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to read the lighthouse as a place of replacement rather than as a solitary tower. First, the position itself matters: it stands at the entrance to Sydney Harbour, meaning its purpose is connected with guiding ships into the harbor. Then there is the similarity between the old and new buildings: the modern structure arose beside the previous one and outwardly resembled it, so the form worked as a sign of continuity.

A separate detail is the biform Fresnel lens, installed in 1933. It shows that the lighthouse's history continued within the functioning structure itself: not only the outer shell changed, but also the lighting technology. The automatic mode introduced in 1976 adds another layer: the building preserved the image of a lighthouse, even though its operation no longer required the earlier constant manual control.
