Middelgrunden

Brief information

Middelgrund first looks like an island, but it was made specifically for war: it is a sea fort on a shoal at the entrance to Copenhagen Harbour. In the late 19th century, it was intended to close off one of the convenient sea positions for shelling the city. So what matters is not only the walls, but the fort’s very position between the fairways: the artificial island was placed where ship traffic and the city’s defense converged at a single point.

The scale also speaks to its purpose. At the time of construction, Middelgrund was the largest artificial island, and its mass amounted to 2.5 million tons. Later the military left, and the former fort became a site for another use: after repairs from 2016 to 2019, the “Youth Island” camp opened here. The change of function did not erase the military foundation, but was layered onto it.

What to notice first

The main principle of the visit is to compare the defensive shell with the island’s later adaptation. The breakwater shows that the fort was built as an independent maritime object that had to withstand the surrounding water. The small harbor in the gorge explains how the island worked from within: it was formerly used by torpedo boats and submarines, meaning the fort was not only a fixed battery.

The two-story granite barracks in the gorge provides the land-based center of this system, while the underground section reveals its hidden scale: 30 rooms and tunnels on three levels occupy 1.65 hectares. Two lighthouses add another layer: the island also had to be legible for navigation. The modern dormitory, dining hall, conference rooms, camping areas, and shelter should be understood as new functions built into a former military machine, not as a separate resort set.
