Museum of Modern Art in Bologna

Brief information

The Museum of Modern Art in Bologna occupies the former municipal bakery Forno del pane. This is an important clue to the place: contemporary art is shown here not in a purpose-built museum palace, but in an industrial urban building that first baked bread for the city and then became a space for exhibitions, performances, concerts, and film screenings.

The collection grew out of Bologna's Gallery of Modern Art: in the second half of the 1990s it needed new space for its own collection and temporary exhibitions. After reconstruction based on a design by Aldo Rossi, the museum opened in 2007. Its foundation is Italian art from the postwar period to the present, so the building works as a frame for a different story: not about old Bologna, but about how the city found a major place for the art of the recent past.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to read the museum through the transformation of a utilitarian building into a cultural space. The first detail is the former bakery Forno del pane itself: its previous function explains why the museum is connected not only with its halls, but also with a large reused shell. The second is the expansion of the building in 1928-1929: it reminds us that the structure changed even before the museum reconstruction, meaning its current appearance did not take shape in a single stage.

The third detail is the scale of the internal program: thousands of works are housed across 9,500 m², and the permanent exhibition is divided into nine thematic parts. This helps visitors see it not as one general hall of modern art, but as a system of themes. An additional sign of the new function is the library, conference hall, classrooms, bookstore, and cafe-restaurant: the former production building has become not only a repository for works, but also a venue for different ways of talking about art.
