Negresco

Brief information

The luxury hotel on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice is memorable not only for its pink dome, but also for the building’s unusual biography: a meeting place for titled guests soon after opening became a military hospital. That is why Le Negresco should be read not as the ordinary facade of an expensive hotel, but as a building where ceremonial luxury survived a sharp change of purpose.

The hotel opened in 1913 and bears the surname of its owner, Henri Negresco. Later, its former glory was restored, and in 2003 the building was added to France’s list of architecturally significant historic monuments. This status matters not in itself: it suggests looking more carefully at the preserved interior elements, where some individual objects are older than the hotel itself.

What to notice first

The main focus is how a new hotel building gathered objects and forms from different eras inside it. In the Royal Salon, you can compare the pink dome with its metal framework from Gustave Eiffel’s workshop and the four-meter Baccarat chandelier beneath it: engineering that was modern for the early 20th century here supports an almost palatial stage.

Nearby, the Louis XIV salon is important. Its ceiling was brought from the Savoyard castle of Marie Mancini, while the ten-ton fireplace came from the Château de Hautefort. These details show the principle of Le Negresco: the interior is not simply styled after history; it includes transferred fragments of old residences. The arrangement of the floors continues the same logic: each is decorated in its own style, from early 20th-century painting to Empire and Napoleon III.
