Porto Municipal Library

Brief Information

The Porto Municipal Library occupies a place that did not become a library right away: the institution began in a hospital, then was housed in the bishop’s palace, and from 1842 was located in the Monastery of Saint Anthony on Rua de João IV. So it is not only a collection of books, but also a space with a former monastic shell, next to the São Lázaro municipal garden.

The beginning of the collection was also modest and memorable: the first books are described as just 16 volumes of manuscripts. Later the library grew through private collections and documents from former monasteries, and in 1876 it became municipal. This fact changes how the place is seen: a modern public library grew out of moves between buildings and out of collections connected with closed religious spaces.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to connect three physical clues. The first is its location in the former Monastery of Saint Anthony itself: today’s reading functions are layered onto a building with a different original purpose. The second is the Hispano-Moorish azulejos, transferred here in 1929–1932 from several monasteries in Portugal. These tiles are important not merely as decoration, but as a visible trace of the fact that the library collected not only texts, but also fragments of a monastic environment.

The third clue is the set of modern rooms and services: a general reading room, a manuscripts department, a children’s and youth department, open access, and areas for printing, photocopying, and digitization. They can be compared with the early core of manuscripts: the place has moved from storing rare materials to being a library with different modes of reading, copying, and working with documents.
