Royal Palace in Oslo

CategoryPalaceAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief information

The palace stands at the end of Karl Johans gate, and the very positioning of the building makes it the final point of the city axis, not just a separate royal residence. It was built for Charles XIV John, who ruled Norway and Sweden, but he died before he could live here. So the palace immediately carries a strange twist: the building was conceived for one monarch, but it became the first permanent royal home only later, under Haakon VII.

Around the palace are the royal square and the 22-hectare royal park, which is open to the public. This is important for how the place is perceived: the monarchs' residence here is not confined to the facade alone, but is embedded in a large open space. History is visible less as a chain of rulers than as a change in the building's role — from a new palace for rare visits to a permanent residence and a place of state traditions.

What to notice first

It makes sense to read the palace through traces of cost-cutting and later corrections to the design. Initially, the architect Hans Linstow wanted two floors and two residential wings on either side of the main facade. After construction was halted, he made a cheaper version: without the wings, but with a third floor. So the palace's volume is connected not only with a ceremonial concept, but also with a recalculation of the budget.

Separately, one can compare the central colonnade and the roof. The colonnade was removed from the 1833 design, but restored before the official opening in 1849. The temporary steep roof was then replaced with a more elegant and expensive flat one. Next to the main building, the former palace stables are important: in 2017 they were converted into the Queen Sonja Art Stable. Thus, beside the residence, a noticeable trace of another function appears — a service building became a public art space.
