Salzburg Cathedral

Brief information

Salzburg Cathedral looks like a Baroque building, but its site is almost nine centuries older than the present walls. The first Christian church here was consecrated in 774; it was Romanesque. After the fire of 1598, the old building was demolished along with 55 damaged houses, and the new cathedral was laid out on the cleared site.

For this reason, the cathedral should be read not as a single surviving medieval monument, but as the result of several ruptures. The most visible of them is connected with the 20th century: during the bombing of Salzburg in 1944, the dome collapsed, and the restoration was largely completed by 1959. The high dome therefore speaks not only of the Baroque design, but also of postwar reconstruction.

What to notice first

It is worth comparing the building’s three verticals: the main volume, 32 meters high; the 79-meter dome; and the 81-meter towers. This difference helps explain how the cathedral is structured as an ascent: the lower body holds the space, while the dome and towers draw the eye upward.

Inside, what matters is not only the scale, but also the recurring centers of sound and worship: the cathedral has 11 altars and 5 organs. However, the main organ is not the old instrument from 1703: it was replaced in 1988 by a new one made in Switzerland. The bells, by contrast, partly preserve an early layer: the oldest were cast in the 16th–17th centuries. In this way, the cathedral combines a Baroque shell, the older sound of bells, and modern replacements that appeared after repairs and restorations.
