Singapore Flyer

Brief information

The Singapore Flyer is notable not only for its height: it was conceived as a giant observation machine built into the city infrastructure near the Marina Centre. Its total height of 165 meters made it, at the time of opening, one of the largest structures of its kind; until March 2014, it remained the tallest observation wheel in the world.

The place should be read through the combination of scale and its placement in the city. The wheel stands at the southeastern tip of reclaimed land, that is, on a site won back from the sea. That is why the stated view of up to 45 kilometers does not work as an abstract figure: from such a height, central Singapore, the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan, and Malaysia's Johor all fall into a single system.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare three parts of the structure: the 150-meter-diameter wheel, the three-story terminal at its base, and the row of enclosed capsules. The terminal matters not as a backdrop, but as part of the construction and the visitor scenario: the wheel does not stand separately on a square, but is integrated into a building with shops, bars, and restaurants. This immediately changes the perception of the attraction: what is before us is not only a rotating circle, but a structure with a lower service level.

The capsules also set the rhythm. There are 28 of them, each designed for 28 passengers, and a full rotation takes 28 minutes. The repetition of the number turns the wheel's mechanism into an almost counting device: sections, capacity, and time are linked together. One more detail changes how the movement is perceived: at first the wheel rotated counterclockwise, but later the direction was changed on the advice of feng shui specialists. Even the rotation here turned out to be not only a technical decision, but also a symbolic one.
