Brief Information

Sponza Palace changed roles so often that it is easier to read it not as a ceremonial shell, but as an urban working machine. At different times, the building of the Republic of Dubrovnik housed a customs office, treasury, bank, mint, and school. A single palace handled money, documents, trade affairs, and education, so its significance is connected not only with its facade, but also with the way the city gathered important services inside it.

The building was constructed by Paskoje Miličević in 1516–1521, in the Gothic style of the Renaissance period. Since 1952, it has housed the Dubrovnik archive with valuable old documents. This modern function unexpectedly continues the former logic of the place: the palace once again preserves what the city's memory and administration rested on.

What to Notice First

The source text provides few described details, so it is best to keep the focus on confirmed elements. It makes sense to compare three things: the palace's position to the left of Luža Square, the space in front of it, and the atrium. The square is important not as a backdrop: since 1950, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival has taken place in front of the palace, and the building becomes part of an open urban event, not only a separate monument.

The atrium is worth noticing separately. It was precisely this space that became the basis for Crytek's Sponza computer model, which is used to demonstrate global illumination. This fact changes the way one looks at the interior space: the atrium is interesting not only for the palace's history, but also for its form, suitable for testing how light works in architecture. The Gothic style of the Renaissance period connects this technical interest with the building's earlier appearance: the palace's form continues to explain it even beyond Dubrovnik.
