Villa Stuck

Brief Information

Franz von Stuck designed the villa not as a neutral house for paintings, but as a unified work: from the layout of the building to the interiors. That is why Villa Stuck is important not only for its preserved living rooms and the artist’s studio, but also because the building itself shows his way of thinking about art. In the late nineteenth century, house, studio, new workshop, and garden came together here.

Since 1992, the villa has operated as a memorial museum. It houses Stuck’s paintings and sculptures, decorative and applied art objects from the turn of the century, and exhibitions about Munich’s artistic milieu and twentieth-century art. The key shift in perspective is simple: the exhibition here is not inserted into incidental walls, but is located within a space that the artist himself conceived as part of his artistic language.

What to notice first

It is worth comparing the entrance, the interior, and the garden: all three parts work as a continuation of a single idea. In front of the entrance portal stands “Amazon” — a bronze cast after Stuck’s 1913 plaster model, installed after the artist’s death. It shows that the villa’s visual world continued to be built up through his own forms.

Inside, what matters is not the individual decorations, but the density of the finish: sculpture, reliefs, murals, inlays, and gilding make the rooms part of the artistic concept. In the garden, the same principle is carried outdoors. It was conceived as a sculpture garden modeled on historic villas: a pergola, an area with a fountain, the front garden by the northern facade with rare trees, and a reconstruction of the ancient deer from Herculaneum connect Stuck’s Jugendstil with his interest in antiquity.
