Weichselmünde

Brief Information

Weichselmünde grew not as a single building, but as a fortress that was expanded and restored again and again after destruction. As a result, its appearance combines different construction techniques, materials, and styles, starting with Gothic. This place is interesting to read not through a single date, but through how a defensive structure changed shape and acquired new belts of protection.

The fortress stands at the mouth of the Vistula and was part of Gdańsk's system of fortifications. The most unexpected modern fact changes the tone of the visit: it is now not only an architectural monument, but also one of Poland's largest bat wintering sites, including very rare species. The military shell here has become a refuge for an entirely different kind of life.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare the center of the fortress with its defensive belts. In the middle stands a round tower: until 1758 it served as a lighthouse, so the fortress reveals not only defense, but also a connection with the river mouth. The tower is surrounded by a brick ring adjoined by officers' houses; this arrangement shows how service buildings gathered around the main vertical volume.

Next, the geometry of the fortifications holds the attention. The inner fort has a square plan and four bastions at the corners, while the outer line once included five bastions and two ramparts; only one rampart has survived to the present day. Even the foundation is unusual: it rests on massive wooden crates under water, filled with stones, over which a thick layer of crushed stone was poured. The fortress is literally set on an engineering structure hidden below the visible architecture.
