Brief Information

The minaret of Al-Kutubiyya is important not only for its height of 69 meters. It became a model for other towers of the Almohad period, including the Hassan Tower in Rabat and Seville’s Giralda. This mosque can therefore be read as the source of a form that was later repeated in different cities.

The name also changes how one sees the place. “Kutubiyya” is associated either with a library attached to the mosque or with the booksellers whose stalls once occupied the area beside it. The Great Mosque of Marrakesh thus turns out to be connected not only with prayer and the authority of its patron, Yaqub al-Mansur, but also with the book trade around the building.

What to Notice First

The main focus here is the minaret and the way its structure connects an outward sign with an inner practice. It is worth noticing the four copper spheres at the top: they are a small detail against the tall tower, but they are precisely what completes the silhouette and makes the summit easy to recognize.

The second important element is hidden inside: the staircase was made wide enough for the muezzin to ascend it on horseback. This fact helps one imagine the scale of the minaret differently: the tower was not just a vertical landmark, but a structure with carefully planned movement inside. From the outside, one can keep in mind this connection between the height, the crowning copper spheres, and the unusually wide internal staircase.
