Brief information

The Marrakech Museum occupies the Dar Mnebhi Palace, and its main intrigue lies not in the display cases, but in the way a former private residence changed its role. The palace was built for an influential dignitary of the early 20th century; later it passed to the state, became a school for girls, fell into disrepair, was restored, and opened as a museum in 1997.

This biography can be read through the structure of the building. The central courtyard was once an open garden with trees, but now it is paved and covered by a roof. As a result, the museum is perceived not as a neutral shell for collections, but as part of the exhibition: a former living space has become a venue for traditional art, contemporary art, concerts, and other events.

What to notice first

It is worth comparing the central courtyard with what it used to be. Today it is a covered, paved space, but originally it functioned as a garden. Several fountains in the center and wall fountains along the sides recall the palace layout, where water was not a separate decoration but part of the courtyard’s design.

Around the courtyard, you can notice covered galleries, colorful zellij tilework, and painted and carved cedar wood. A large brass chandelier with geometric and Arabic motifs hangs over the center: it emphasizes that the former open center of the palace has now become an interior hall. A separate trace of the building’s former life is the hammam with its domed and vaulted spaces; together with the kitchen, it later began to be used for museum events.
