Art Deco Museum (Bogota)

Brief Information

The Art Deco Museum in Bogotá is interesting because the style is visible here not only in the display cases: the exhibition itself is housed in a 1930s building constructed in the Art Deco style. Its small area — 300 square meters — makes the museum feel more like a carefully assembled cabinet of the era than a large survey institution.

The museum is based on the personal collection of Carlos Alberto González, which he built over more than thirty years. As a result, the collection presents Art Nouveau and Art Deco across different scales: from painting, sculpture, and graphic art to furniture, industrial design, documentary photography, and objects made of metal, ceramics, wood, and glass. An important shift in perspective is that here the style is read not as a façade fashion, but as the language of things that were used and produced in Colombia, the Americas, and Europe.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare three levels of objects. The first is the 1930s building itself: it establishes the Art Deco framework even before you encounter the collection. The second is furniture from the period between the First and Second World Wars, including chairs by Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier: through it, you can see how the style enters the form of an everyday object rather than remaining merely decoration.

The third level is materials and graphic art. Metal, ceramics, wood, and glass help reveal that Art Nouveau and Art Deco worked differently on hard, shiny, and fragile surfaces. The posters and oil paintings by Sergio Trujillo Magnenat are worth keeping in the same field of attention as the vases by Émile Gallé: in this way, the collection unfolds as a comparison between artistic image, decorative object, and industrial design.
