Brief information

The Leopoldo Rother Museum of Architecture operates in a former printing house that Rother himself designed together with engineer Guillermo González Zuleta in 1948. As a result, the place can be read on two levels: architecture is displayed here, but the building itself has also become part of architectural history. In 1995, it was included on Colombia’s list of national cultural heritage.

The museum was founded by the National University of Colombia in 1986 and is located on the Bogotá campus near El Dorado Avenue. Its rarity lies not only in its status as the first and only architecture museum in the country. Something else is more important: for conservation reasons, the permanent collections are almost never exhibited, so temporary exhibitions become the visible part of a much more closed archive.

What to notice right away

It is worth comparing the old printing house with the museum layout. The exhibition occupies 643 square meters: five exhibition halls, a lobby, and a small auditorium. This structure shows how an industrial building was adapted for displaying and discussing architecture without turning it merely into a document repository.

Within the materials themselves, the transition from concept to the image of a building is important. Original plans and drawings show the project before construction, photographs record objects that already exist, and architectural models provide a three-dimensional version of the idea. Personal documents and autobiographical notes add not a biographical reference, but a trace of the architect’s work: behind the drawing is a person whose decisions later become urban space.
