Brief information

At the Bangkok Planetarium, the main thing is hidden not in the scale of the building, but in its sky-projection machine: it has a Carl Zeiss Mark IV projector, the first such projector in Southeast Asia. Because of this, the planetarium reads not simply as a hall with a dome, but as an early regional center of public astronomy.

The building is located on Sukhumvit Road and is part of the Science Centre for Education. Construction began in 1962 and it opened on August 8, 1964, so the important thing is the combination itself: an educational institution, a large demonstration hall, and complex projection equipment gathered around a single dome.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to compare three physical details: the dome, the hall, and the projector. The dome, 20.60 meters in diameter and 13 meters high, defines the form of the entire experience: the image is designed not for a flat screen, but for a surface that surrounds the viewer from above. The 450-seat demonstration hall shows that the place was originally designed for mass screenings, not for an intimate study room.

The Carl Zeiss Mark IV projector explains why the technical component here is not secondary. It was the first projector of its kind in Southeast Asia, and this fact changes the way one looks at the dome: its size and the hall were needed so that a machine rare for the region could operate before a large audience. The source information contains few other observable details, so the main focus of the visit is the relationship between the dome’s form, the hall’s capacity, and the projection technology.
