Baur au Lac

Brief information

On May 27, 2015, this luxury hotel on Talstrasse turned out to be more than just a backdrop for guests’ private lives: Swiss police, at the request of the FBI, arrested seven high-ranking FIFA officials here. This marked the beginning of FIFA-gate, the largest corruption scandal in the history of football. This fact changes how one sees this quiet hotel address: behind the facade of what is, for Zurich, an ordinary hotel, an episode of global sports politics took place.

Baur au Lac was opened by Johannes Baur in 1844 and is still controlled by the Baur family. This makes the place interesting not only for its status as a luxury hotel, but also for its rare continuity of management. The complete reconstruction carried out in 2008–2010 adds another layer: its current appearance is connected with a recent renewal, although the hotel’s own history began in the 19th century.

What to notice first

The source text barely describes the building’s exterior details, so it is better to base an inspection on verifiable signs of its function and history. It makes sense to compare the hotel character of Baur au Lac itself with two time markers: its opening in 1844 and the complete reconstruction of 2008–2010. In this way, the place reads as an old hotel that continues to operate after a modern update, rather than as a preserved historical object.

The second important detail is the address-specific nature of the 2015 event: the arrests of FIFA officials took place in this very hotel. This is not a decorative detail, but a way to understand the building’s purpose differently. Here, the luxury hotel was a space for closed meetings and accommodation of influential guests, and then suddenly became a public point of reference for an international scandal.
