Brief information

Kunsthalle Zürich is interesting because contemporary art here has settled not in a purpose-built museum building, but in the former “Löwenbräu Zürich” brewery. Since 1996, the museum has occupied the converted factory premises: the industrial space was adapted for temporary exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, film programs, and other formats connected with contemporary art.

Before this, Kunsthalle had already worked with a former industrial setting: after its first occasional exhibitions, it regularly presented contemporary art in the complex of a former worsted-spinning mill on the Limmat. That is why its current address reads not as a random shell, but as a continuation of a line: art appears in places where production once took place. An important shift happened precisely because of the move to “Löwenbräu”: Kunsthalle found itself next to the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art and private galleries, forming an urban center of contemporary art.

What to notice first

The original text gives little description of the building’s appearance, materials, and decorative details, so the main focus is not on ornament, but on the change in the function of the space. It makes sense to notice three things: the former factory premises of “Löwenbräu Zürich,” their redesign specifically for exhibitions, and the proximity of several contemporary art institutions within one complex. These facts help one see the place as a repurposed working environment rather than as a neutral museum container.

You can compare the building’s former purpose with its current rhythm of operation. The brewery was connected with production, while Kunsthalle uses the same converted premises for temporary exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, and film programs. Nearby are the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art and private galleries, including Hauser & Wirth. Thus one former industrial site became not a single museum, but a dense hub of contemporary art.
