Brasília National Stadium Mané Garrincha

Brief information

The stadium in Brasília is interesting not because of its age, but because of its sharp change in scale: the 1974 arena for 42,000 spectators was dismantled and reassembled for the major football tournaments of the early 2010s. After the reconstruction, it could accommodate about 71,000 spectators and meet FIFA requirements for matches of the 2014 World Cup.

The name Mané Garrincha connects the structure not only with the memory of the footballer. In 1982, he played here for 20 minutes for the local team Planaltina; it was his last match. That is why the stadium’s name works as a precise link to the place where the player’s biography ended not with a commemorative plaque, but with an appearance on the pitch.

What to notice first

Three physical details of the reconstruction are important in the stadium’s description. The lower tier was dismantled, the upper tier was incorporated into the new oval structure, and the playing field was reduced in size. These changes explain why the modern arena reads not as an ordinary expansion of the old stadium, but as an almost new structure built around a reworked bowl.

It makes sense to compare the arena’s form with the purpose of the field. Reducing the playing field made the stadium fully football-oriented, meaning the reconstruction was not only about capacity and international requirements. The oval structure and reworked tiers show how the former city arena was adapted to the format of major tournaments. Even the dry cost figure begins to work as a visible clue: the project grew from a renovation into large-scale construction.
