Buenos Aires Central Post Office

CategoryBuildingAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief information

The second-floor windows on the Sarmiento Street side were conceived as entrances. This unusual detail for a post office appeared because of revisions to the project and funding cuts: for a long time, the building was adapted to a growing postal service, new technologies, and a difficult site. The Central Post Office was built as a government building with a palatial appearance, so its facade speaks the language of prestige, while its internal arrangement speaks the language of managing flows of people and correspondence.

Later, the postal function moved out, but the building did not become just a shell. When it was converted into a cultural center, the historic part on Sarmiento Street was restored, and a modern section with concert halls was added on the Avenida Corrientes side. That is why the place is interesting to read not as a single era, but as a large communications machine repurposed for public culture.

What to notice first

You can compare three levels of the building: the ceremonial facade, the former operations hall, and the square at the entrance. On the facade, the mansard roof, truncated dome, tall windows, and four monumental columns are important. These elements connect the postal institution with French academicism: an ordinary government service was given the appearance of a palace.

Inside, the meaning changes: a broad staircase leads to the former operations hall, a tall space lit by skylights at the fourth-floor level. This is not merely decoration, but a space designed for the large movement of people and postal work. In the square beside the main entrance, the same theme is brought outside: the sculptures of Morse, the Chasqui, and the postman recall that behind the solemn facade stood the history of transmitting messages, from colonial mail to the telegraph.
