House of Culture (Buenos Aires)

Brief Information

On the spire of the former La Prensa editorial office stood not merely a statue, but a symbol of the profession: a gilded bronze Pallas Athena with an electric lamp in her hand. The lamp represented the fire of Prometheus, while the siren installed later was meant to alert the city to events the newspaper considered historic. As a result, the building reads like an old media machine projected onto the facade: news was not only printed here, it was literally proclaimed from above.

The building was completed by 1898 as the headquarters of a major newspaper on Avenida de Mayo. Its Beaux-Arts design with French influence emphasized the editorial office’s ambition. After changes in ownership and function, the building became a House of Culture, while its former newspaper symbolism remained the main key to its appearance.

What to Notice First

It is worth comparing the top of the building with its interior details. The spire with Athena shows the public side of the former editorial office: the figure of press freedom is raised high above the street, and the lamp turns the allegory into an almost technical sign of communication. The siren on the spire adds sound to this idea: the building was designed not only for sight, but also for the city’s hearing.

Inside, the same concept is expressed through materials and halls. Imported elevators, French mosaic tiles, clocks, and wrought iron speak of an editorial office that presented itself as a modern and international institution. The Golden Hall at the center of the first floor is important not for luxury in itself: literary readings and lectures were held there. And the passage to the neighboring city hall, transformed into the Ana Díaz Salon, shows the later change of function from newspaper house to cultural space.
