Cairo Tower
Brief Information
The Cairo Tower was conceived as a structure that was meant to be visible from every part of Cairo. Its scale is therefore not important in itself: the 187-meter concrete tower became an urban landmark and even proved to be 43 meters taller than the Pyramid of Khufu, located 15 kilometers to the southwest.
The tower stands in central Cairo, in the Zamalek district on Gezira Island, but its story begins not with an urban-planning calculation, but with a political gesture. According to the original account, money handed over to bribe Nasser was confiscated and directed toward the construction of the television tower. Because of this, height here reads as a demonstrative response: the tower was not meant to hide, but to show itself to the whole city.
What to Notice First
In the tower’s appearance, three things can be compared: the concrete structure, the lotus form, and the upper tier. The concrete emphasizes the engineering character of the structure: this is a television tower, not a decorative column. The form, reminiscent of a lotus flower, softens this utilitarian quality and turns the technical object into a recognizable silhouette.
The top of the tower is also important for understanding the idea. It contains an observation deck and a revolving restaurant, meaning the structure functions not only as a transmitting tower but also as a viewing point. The result is a simple connection: the tower was built so that Cairo would see it, while at the top elements appeared from which Cairo itself can be viewed all around.
