Brief information

Cairo stands where the Nile leaves the desert valley and begins to split into the branches of the delta. That is why the city reads not as a single center, but as a set of different banks, islands, and absorbed outskirts. The eastern bank preserves Old Cairo, with narrow streets, dense development, and many old mosques. The western districts acquired a different pattern: under Isma'il Pasha they were built up on the model of Paris, with wide boulevards and small parks.

The most unexpected scale here is not in antiquity, but in proximity. Development has come so close to the Giza Plateau that the nearest house is only 200 meters from the Great Sphinx. The city does not merely neighbor the monuments: it has closely surrounded a space that is usually imagined separately from the modern capital.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to compare the eastern and western patterns of the city. In Old Cairo, the narrow lanes, apartment buildings, and hundreds of old mosques matter: they show a district that grew for centuries without a single strict plan. On the western bank, a different order is visible: government buildings, modern architecture, wide boulevards, and small parks connected with the reconstruction on the Parisian model.

A separate focus is the islands in the middle of the Nile. Roda connects the oldest Muslim buildings, the Manial Palace, the Cairo University hospital, and the nilometer, that is, an instrument for measuring the river level. Gezira, or Zamalek, is described differently: villas, embassies, company offices, modern buildings, and hotels. Heliopolis belongs to this same principle of absorbed parts: a European suburb with a distinctive architectural style first stood apart, and then merged with growing Cairo.
