Central Post Office Building in Santiago

CategoryBuildingAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief information

The Santiago Central Post Office stands on a site whose role changed sharply: until the mid-19th century, the presidential palace was located here, and after a fire, the main postal building began to be constructed in its place. So this is not just a service address by the Plaza de Armas, but a point where state power gave way to urban communication.

Construction of the building began in 1881, based on a design by Ricardo Brown. Its current appearance is associated with the 1908 remodeling of the facade by Ramón Fehrman. The status of a National Monument of Chile, granted in 1976, is important here not as an award, but as a clue: the value is seen specifically in the preserved historic building and its place in the center of Santiago.

What to notice right away

It makes sense to view the building through three things: location, facade, and style. The post office stands north of the Plaza de Armas, at the corner of Calle Catedral and Calle Puente; this location connects it with the central urban space, rather than with peripheral postal infrastructure. Neoclassicism helps one read the facade as an official, orderly building: symmetry, a strict composition, and a sense of state representativeness are important, if they are noticeable in its appearance.

It is especially worth keeping the facade in mind: the modern appearance emerged after the 1908 transformation. This detail changes how one looks at the building. Before the visitor is not the frozen result of a single construction project, but a post office that received its final face later than its main construction. And behind it remains an even earlier layer: the site of the former presidential palace, which disappeared after a fire.
