Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago

Brief information

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago is not confined to a single address: it is located in two park sites in the city at once. One part is in Forestal Park, in the rear section of the building of the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts; the other is in Quinta Normal Park, in a building called the “Versailles Palace.” This already changes the perception: contemporary art here is shown not in an isolated new building, but alongside a broader museum and urban setting.

The museum opened in 1947 and is administered by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile. This fact helps one read it not only as a collection of exhibits, but also as an institution connected with art education. The collection covers works from the late 19th century and includes Chilean and foreign artists, so the word “contemporary” here means not a single era, but a long line of artistic exploration.

What to notice first

It makes sense to begin with the museum’s very structure: the two venues are located in different parks and are connected not by a shared shell, but by a shared collection. Forestal Park is important because the museum occupies the rear part of the building of the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts; Quinta Normal Park because it uses a separate building called the “Versailles Palace.” Comparing these two places shows that the museum exists as a distributed structure rather than as one monumental address.

Within the collection, it is worth distinguishing not only the names of the artists, but also the media: prints, photographs, paintings, drawings, watercolors, and sculptures. The share of prints is especially noticeable: more of them are listed than paintings. This proportion changes expectations of a museum of contemporary art: what matters here is not only large canvases and sculptural volumes, but also editioned graphic works, photography, and more intimate works on paper.
