Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

Brief Information

Mumbai Airport has two names built into its layout: the official Chhatrapati Shivaji name and the older names Sahar and Santa Cruz, which are tied to different parts of the complex. Domestic Terminal 1 is associated with Santa Cruz, while international Terminal 2 is associated with Sahar. As a result, the place reads not as one seamless terminal, but as a large aviation hub assembled from different zones and former names.

An unexpected twist is hidden in the origin of the site. During World War II, RAF Santa Cruz was based here, and in the 1950s it was transferred to India's civil authorities. The old military name did not disappear completely: it remained in the name of the domestic terminal and helps explain why the modern airport is arranged as several connected but physically separated parts.

What to Notice Right Away

It makes sense to compare Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 as two different logics within one airport. They use the same airfield, but stand separately: the source gives 10-15 minutes for moving between them. This explains why the old names Santa Cruz and Sahar matter not as a historical detail, but as a way to distinguish parts of the complex.

At Terminal 2, it is worth noticing its original core: aircraft stands 41-46 and gates 3-8 were equipped with India's first jet bridges. This detail shows where the airport moved from simple boarding to a more modern passenger-service arrangement. Another clue is the two intersecting runways: 14/32 lies between the terminals, while the main 09/27 runs south of the buildings. Their layout shows that the terminals and aircraft movement here are closely fitted to one another.
