Haji Ali Mosque

Brief Information

The Haji Ali Mosque stands not on a city street, but on a small islet off the coast of Worli in Mumbai. A narrow causeway connects it to the shore, and an important feature of the place is built into this arrangement: it can be crossed only during low tides. As a result, the shrine is perceived not as a separate building, but as a complex whose accessibility depends on the sea.

Inside, the mosque is combined with a dargah — the tomb of Haji Ali. According to the original legend, a wealthy Muslim merchant gave up his possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca, but never reached it by sea; the mosque is believed to stand where he is buried. This fact changes the way one sees the complex’s island location: here the sea is not a backdrop, but part of the story through which the place of burial and the place of worship came to coincide.

What to Notice First

In the appearance of the complex, one can compare its vertical element, interior decoration, and traces of the marine environment. The 26-meter-high minaret defines the main silhouette: it explains why the structure easily becomes a landmark amid the water and the shore. Inside, the focus shifts to the tomb: it lies within the mosque, is covered with red-and-green brocade and surrounded by a silver frame, so the space reads both as a place of prayer and as a place of veneration for a specific saint.

The main hall should be viewed through its columns: they are marble, decorated with colored glass, and inscribed with the Ninety-Nine Names of Allah. These details show that ornamentation here is connected not only with material, but also with text. It is also worth noting the vulnerability of the building itself: salty winds from the surrounding sea corrode much of the structure. The same water that makes the mosque insular gradually changes its material appearance.
