Dam of the Nizhne-Isetsky Plant

CategoryArchitectural structureAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief Information

Griboyedov Street now runs along the crest of the Nizhne-Isetskaya Dam, but this is not just a road across the water. The structure appeared on the Iset River in 1789-1790 to provide power for the future Nizhne-Isetsky Mint, and the Nizhne-Isetsky Pond formed along with it. That is why the dam should be read as a working mechanism: it held back water, directed it toward production, and constantly changed because of repairs, fires, and wear.

The most telling turn came after the plant had already closed: in 1915, a small hydroelectric power station was installed here, and in 1921 it supplied electricity for the first electric light bulb in Nizhne-Isetsk. The later reconstruction of 1959-1960 did not completely erase the past: the historic larch gates were preserved, and a neoclassical pavilion for the mechanisms and control panel appeared above the sluice facilities.

What to notice first

It makes sense to compare three parts of the dam: the crest with the street running along it, the stone embankment along the structure, and the pavilion above the sluice facilities. The street shows that the technical dam became part of the urban fabric. The stone embankment appeared during the 1865 repair and reminds us that the earthen structure had to be reinforced more than once. The 1960 pavilion is important not as decoration in itself: it covers the mechanisms and control panel, meaning it is directly connected with the operation of the sluices.

It is also worth remembering the hidden water system. In the original description, the old wooden water conduits first supplied water to the factory workshops, and later they were replaced by pipes. The surviving larch gates after reconstruction link today's dam with this early arrangement. As a result, the visible details here are distributed across time: the embankment speaks of 19th-century repairs, the gates of old hydraulic engineering, and the pavilion of Soviet reconstruction and water management.
