Dam on the Olkhovka River

CategoryBridge, Architectural structureAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief information

The dam on the Olkhovka began as a water-control structure and also became part of a city road: since the first half of the 20th century, Kolmogorov Street has run along its embankment. This place should therefore be read in two modes at once. The earthen embankment holds back and regulates the water of Olkhovsky Pond, while on top it functions as a pedestrian and road bridge.

The most expressive part is on the downstream side, below the dam along the current. The retaining wall in the Classical style once framed the ceremonial entrance to the ensemble of the General’s Dacha, destroyed in the first quarter of the 20th century. What remains of its former ceremonial meaning is not the estate, but the stone architecture of an engineering structure: a rare case in which the entrance has disappeared, while its architectural framing continues to hold back the water and support the road.

What to notice first

It is worth comparing three things: the central opening, the six blind arched niches, and the buttresses between them. The opening is needed for the water outlet, while the niches and arches turn the working retaining wall into a facade with a seven-part scheme. The trapezoidal buttresses do more than simply divide the surface: by the way it takes loads, the dam is classified as a buttress dam, meaning these projections are connected with its structural logic.

The materials also show the structure’s dual nature. The retaining wall is built of roughly hewn granite blocks and red brick, with wrought-iron strips, pins, and anchor loops. Alongside this engineering set stand massive two-column porticoes of the Doric order. The result is not decoration laid over a dam, but a joining of a solid hydraulic structure with the ceremonial language of a former entrance.
