Galatasaray Island

Brief information

Galatasaray Island stands out not for its size, but for its dense succession of roles. This small piece of land in the Bosphorus, just 165 meters from the Kurucesme shore and north of the Bosphorus Bridge, first became the private property of the court architect Sarkis Balyan: in 1872 Sultan Abdulaziz gave him the island, and Balyan built a three-story house for himself there.

Later, the island underwent an almost everyday yet expressive transformation: after being a private estate and then leased by a ferry company, it long served as a coal warehouse. In 1957 it was bought by the Galatasaray Sports Club, and the present meaning of the place is now tied to club infrastructure, leisure, and water: it has sports facilities, restaurants, bars, and two swimming pools.

What to notice first

It makes sense to read the island through its closeness to the shore and its collection of buildings. The distance of 165 meters explains why this isolated part of the Bosphorus did not remain merely a beautiful point on the water: ferries run to it, and the location itself made it suitable for residences, bars, and restaurants.

The second important detail is the two swimming pools. They connect the island not only with leisure, but also with Galatasaray's sporting history: one of the pools was used by the water polo team in 1957-1958. Alongside the restaurants and bars, this changes how the place is seen: the island appears as a club venue where a private estate, a coal warehouse, and a sports base succeeded one another on the same small piece of the Bosphorus.
