Istiklal

Brief information

Istiklal does not run in a straight line: the street has the shape of a boomerang, and in its curve lies Galatasaray Square with Galatasaray High School. This shape helps one read the street not as an ordinary shopping avenue, but as a link between different parts of Beyoglu: from Taksim Square toward the Golden Horn for about 1.4 kilometers.

Istiklal grew out of the former Cadde-i Kebir, the “Grand Avenue,” where trade and crafts stood alongside homes, workshops, churches, and embassies. That is why the modern pedestrian street with shops, cafes, restaurants, and the historic tram looks like a place where commercial life did not replace the old urban fabric, but became embedded in it.

What to notice right away

It is worth noticing how the street’s different functions appear in specific objects. The bend of Istiklal with Galatasaray Square shows that the street is arranged not as a ceremonial axis, but as movement with a break in the middle. The Church of Saint Louis of the French is important not only as a church: the original text links its site with a plot received by French Catholics in the 17th century, that is, with the early European presence in Beyoglu.

Churches, embassies, and residential buildings, with which the street was built up as it was extended northward, are connected with this same history. The Egyptian Apartments add another layer: they are Art Nouveau from the early 20th century, built on commission for the Egyptian khedive. The historic tram and the nearby Tunel line change the scale of perception alongside this urban setting: Istiklal should be considered not only by its facades, but also by how transport, commerce, diplomatic buildings, and places of worship ended up on one pedestrian street.
