Gate of Saint Minias

Brief information

The Gate of Saint Minias differs from other Florentine gates in that it has no tower. For a fortress gate, this is an important detail: the guards were not stationed in a tower volume, but used the passage above the arch. Because of this, the place reads not as a mini-fortress, but as a more restrained fragment of the city wall.

The gate was built in 1320 together with Florence’s sixth circuit of walls. Its position also explains the name: the road to the Basilica of Saint Minias on the Mountain began here. Today this helps explain why the gate stands between Via di San Miniato and Via del Monte alle Croci: it marked not only the city boundary, but also the start of the climb to an important place beyond the walls.

What to notice first

The main focus here is how the defensive function is hidden within a simple form. It is worth noting the absence of a tower and comparing it with the passage above the gate: that is where the guards were stationed. On the inner side, a staircase to this passage is visible, and it explains the gate’s design better than any date: the guards went up directly inside the structure.

On the outer side there are two stone coats of arms with the city’s symbols. They show the ceremonial side of the gate, facing outward, while the inner side preserves a more practical detail: the staircase. The wooden doors are also worth noting: in 1996 they were restored as replicas of the originals, which had been lost in the 19th century. Therefore the present appearance combines the medieval gate scheme with a later restoration, not only the surviving masonry.
