Gates of Faenza

Brief information

The Faenza Gate is important not only as a remnant of Florence’s old wall, but as a structure in which one defensive system was literally absorbed into another. In 1534-1537 it was incorporated into the central part of the Fortezza da Basso, but it was not demolished: Antonio da Sangallo the Younger preserved the gate inside the new fortress structure. As a result, this place helps you see not a clean line of the city wall, but the moment when an earlier boundary became part of a later fortification.

The name also disrupts the usual reading. It is connected not with the town located in another direction, but with a nun named Faenza from the local convent. After that, the word “Faenza” beside the gate reads not as a road sign, but as a trace of local memory that became attached to this section of the wall.

What to notice right away

The main focus here is not a separate arch, but the way different parts of the defenses were layered over one another. It makes sense to compare the gate itself with the Fortezza da Basso: the old passage did not disappear, but was incorporated into its central part. This detail explains why the structure should be understood as a preserved fragment of an earlier city wall inside a later fortress.

The second important detail is on the outer side of the wall. During restorations in the second half of the 20th century, a bridge was discovered there. It led across the old bed of the Mugnone, which served as a moat. This connection changes the way the place is seen: the wall, the gate, the bridge, and the riverbed worked together. The gate was not simply an opening in the wall, but part of a crossing over a water barrier.
