Brief information

The name “Vertolyotka” is literal here: this place was a working helicopter pad for an experimental aviation plant, not just a good viewpoint. The plant developed turbojet and turboprop engines, had its own Mi helicopters, and they flew from here right up until the 2000s. So the present-day recreation area grew not out of a park, but out of a technical site.

This change of function explains the place’s main paradox well. The site on the high riverbank now serves as a viewpoint: it stands 120 meters above the Volga, and nothing blocks the panorama. The aviation history adds an unexpected scale to the view: after the Soviet lunar program was closed, mothballed NK-33 engines were hidden in the hangars on this site, some of which were sold decades later to an American company.

What to notice first

It makes sense to read the place through the combination of a former technical site and a new public area. The first detail is the high edge itself above the Volga: thanks to the height and open view, what can be seen from here is not separate fragments, but the connected sweep of the river, Samara, and distant landmarks. The Zhiguli Gates are in the center and to the right, the Zhiguli Mountains are to the left, and the Sokolyi Mountains and Krasnaya Glinka are to the right; this helps you not just look into the distance, but break down the panorama by direction.

The second group of details relates to the 2021 landscaping: pedestrian paths, lighting, railings, benches, lounge chairs, and children’s play areas. These elements show how a site with a factory past was turned into a place for relaxation. Against this background, it is especially noticeable that the old name has not disappeared: it preserves the memory of the helicopters and hangars more strongly than an ordinary sign would.
