Wedding Palace in Samara

Brief information

The Samara Wedding Palace looks like an independent festive building, but it was built as an extension between two 14-story residential buildings. Moreover, for several years the future registry office was listed in documents as a household services complex: that made the project easier to approve. This disguise explains an important feature of the building: it does not stand separately, but is assembled as a two-level podium that connects the neighboring high-rises.

The design was created in 1971 by Alexey Gerasimov and Vagan Karkaryan, but the palace opened only on January 18, 1984. In the same year, the project received a second-degree diploma at the All-Russian competition of architectural works. That is why the building is interesting not only for its purpose: it is a rare case in which an official ceremonial function is hidden inside an urban residential development, while the extension itself is turned into an expressive architectural landmark.

What to notice right away

You can compare two lines of the concept: the external form and the internal symbols of family. From the outside, the building is described as Gothic and conceived in the form of two palms joined by rings. Alongside this, not only the silhouette is important, but also its position between the houses: the two-level podium connects two 14-story residential towers, which makes the palace read as an insertion that both serves an urban function and holds the composition of the site together.

Inside, the same meaning is repeated through materials and images. White marble creates a solemn backdrop, the stained-glass window made of Baltic glass in the great hall is connected with the main ceremonial space, and the stained-glass windows of the fireplace hall continue this theme on a smaller scale. The tapestry with young parents and a child and the plaster panel with a man and a woman under a tree translate official registration into clear images of family and the continuation of lineage. Here it is useful to look not at individual decor, but at how one idea is repeated in the form of the building, the halls, and the wall images.
