Ilmarine Quarter

CategoryHistoric districtAdded byAwesome PlaceAdded

Brief Information

The Ilmarine Quarter did not arise on an empty site, but within a former machine-building plant. It is therefore useful to read it as a redeveloped industrial area: some of the factory buildings were preserved, some were demolished, and residential buildings and a hotel appeared nearby. Four buildings of the former F. Wiegand factory are recognized as architectural monuments, and it is they that maintain the quarter’s connection with its manufacturing past.

An important turning point came after the factory function disappeared: the empty complex began to be rebuilt in the late 1990s. A five-story height limit was set for the new buildings so as not to block views of the Old Town. Because of this, the history of the place can be read not only from the old facades, but also from the scale of the later development: the former factory became a residential quarter, but it did not turn into a site completely free of its past.

What to Notice First

It makes sense to compare the four preserved factory buildings as different ways of presenting industrial architecture. The administration building faces Põhja Boulevard with its ceremonial facade: the five-part facade, three shallow risalits, and broad cornice make it more representative than utilitarian. The machine shop stands on a triangular plot between Põhja Boulevard and Suur-Patarei Street; the shape of the plot itself explains why the building is perceived as built into the street corner.

The mechanical workshop shows a rougher production side: unplastered flagstone, a gable roof, an end facade with a pediment, and a decorative weather vane. In the foundry workshop, the south facade is important: the main entrance is emphasized by a round arch, and the same motif is repeated in the window above it, while the other windows have segmental arches. The new residential buildings, with sharp gable roofs, bay windows, and attics, can be compared with the old blocks: the quarter is built on the adjacency of a preserved factory shell and later residential development.
